What is HHC (Hexahydrocannabinol)?

POST BY: HEMPOIL®
11 MINUTES READ

General Information HHC

Cannabis, its cannabinoids, and terpenes are constantly progressing for their therapeutic or recreational properties, numerous benefits, and use. The most famous cannabinoids widely used and legal in various countries worldwide are cannabidiol, cannabigerol, and cannabinol, while tetrahydrocannabinol is conventionally legal in many states. However, the cannabis plant has over 400 chemical compounds and more than 100 cannabinoids with potential therapeutic properties.

Another cannabinoid highlighted by researchers, consumers, and people who deal with the medicinal properties of cannabis is Hexahydrocannabinol(HHC). It is a cannabinoid becoming quickly popular in the wellness sector. Also, it is one of the first choices for people who want similar properties to THC but with a milder effect. Below we will thoroughly examine HHC, its use, properties, available products, and side effects.

What is Hexahydrocannabinol (HHC)?

Hexahydrocannabinol is one of the cannabis phytocannabinoids detected in the plant in small amounts. Various HHC products available in the market are from industrial hemp strains, which have converted the cannabinoids CBD and THC into the synthetic form of HHC (Hexahydrocannabinol).

It was first created in 1944 by the chemist Roger Adams, who used the hydrogenation method, adding hydrogen molecules to the cannabinoid Δ-9-THC resulting in HHC. The hydrogenation process is quite popular. For example, margarine, which is quite popular, combines liquid vegetable oils with hydrogen. For many years this compound remained hidden until it became famous because of the effect similarities to THC.

HHC (Hexahydrocannabinol) Properties and Benefits

Hexahydrocannabinol is constantly taking consumers and the market by storm. There are various HHC preparations, and it has similar effects to the favorite, although controversial δ-9-THC. Many people prefer it since it has a stronger effect than δ-8-THC but is less potent than δ-9thc.

HHC benefits differ from THC, mainly because its effect does not last as long as THC. Recent data demonstrate its direct relaxation. As a general rule, although in higher dosages, HHC has a 70% of THC effect.

HHC contribution to mood, chronic pain, or sleep disorders

Recent available data refer to the analgesic effect of hexahydrocannabinol concerning the sense of pain and sleep disorders. Furthermore, there is evidence showing the anti-cancer effect of this chemical compound. Many people report that HHC is more efficient in the sense of pain than Δ-8 THC or Δ-9 THC.

HHC is the answer to a busy day, offering quick relief from anxiety and fatigue, with a milder effect than THC. The benefits we get with cannabis flowers HHC are:

  • Promote sleep
  • Reduce pain
  • Improve mood
  • Minimize over-thinking
  • Improve appetite and digestion

«Personally, with HHC, I feel energetic. I go to the gym. I’m sharp; my brain’s working properly. I typically have back and shoulder pain, but I have no pain when I’m on it».

Liam Burns of Bearly Legal Hemp.

Is HHC natural or synthetic?

HHC (Hexahydrocannabinol) is a cannabinoid naturally occurring in small amounts in industrial cannabis Sativa L. (hemp). Cannabis is a plant distinguished into two types: industrial cannabis and medical cannabis/marijuana. The latter contains a powerful compound called Delta-9-THC, known for its euphoric effect.

However, due to the naturally occurring small quantity of HHC in cannabis plants, producers cannot make HHC products. So what do they do? They hydrogenate THC. It is a complex process at a molecular level where the chemical bonds transform. The process is called isomerism or isomerization. The final product of this process is HHC distillate. The CBD hemp flowers are then coated with the HHC distillate to create the final product. So, HHC is both a natural and a semi-synthetic cannabinoid. Its form depends on the source and the method used for the product.

What are the HHC cannabis flowers?

Cannabis flowers with hexahydrocannabinol HHC are the new global trend nobody wants to miss. They are cannabidiol CBD flowers infused in HHC. The pleasure of CBD flowers goes one step further with the addition of HHC (Hexahydrocannabinol). HHC is a new cannabinoid that will blow our minds. Let’s dive into the beautiful HHC world with new tastes, exquisite flavors, and a sweet feeling of euphoria.

HHC preparations last longer on the shelves

Hexahydrocannabinol products are more resistant than products containing natural cannabinoids, such as cannabidiol oil or tetrahydrocannabinol. The phytocannabinoids are pretty sensitive to heat and UV rays from the sun. As a result, they lose their effect if exposed for a prolonged period in those conditions. On the contrary, HHC presents higher resistance thanks to the hydrogenation method.

What other HHC types do exist?

When HHC is produced from Delta-8, there are two primary analogs:

  • HHCr
  • HHCs

HHCr is more psychoactive, according to laboratory and empirical tests. As a result, it’s more expensive than HHC, which is more dormant. Many brands in the market trade non-synthetic HHC products. These are HHCs or S-dominant, containing approximately 70% S and 20% R for about 90% of total HHC. Since HHCs are much milder, consumers will get disappointed because they will not feel the appropriate psychoactive effects.

Therefore, there is an urgent need to circulate certified high-quality products in the market. After all, consumers do not base their choice on the price, but they usually choose quality over a cheap solution. HHC products must be certified, produced by famous brands with available analysis for the S and R quota, and extra analysis from independent certified laboratories for the lack of heavy metals.

What other HHC products are available?;

Thanks to the features and properties of HHC, and mostly thanks to the longevity of the product, there is an in-progress a whole new market with cannabis products:

  • HHC Cannabis Flowers
  • HHC Disposable electronic cigarettes
  • HHC Oil
  • HHC Infused Hash (Charas / Choco)
  • HHC Gummy Bears

All HHC products may offer the benefits of this cannabinoid; it’s just that each product type has a different time of effect, as with all industrial or medicinal cannabis products. The most direct result, just in a few moments, comes with the use of electronic cigarettes, HHC Charas (Choco), or cannabis flowers. The oil starts having effects in 15-30 minutes, and finally, the edibles, treats, and snacks have an effect in 30 minutes to 2 hours after consuming them.

What should we look for before buying HHC products?

As usual, when it comes to a new global trend, there are always those who exploit the product by overloading the market with non-certified products of low quality that could harm our wallets and, most importantly, our health. HHC is available in various types, and some distributors find the perfect excuse to produce products of poor quality.

First, we have 9-beta-hydroxy-hexahydrocannabinol, which is common in the market. It is a fully synthetic version of HHC that is difficult to distinguish even in the lab tests from Delta-8. Unfortunately, some ruthless distributors mix HHC with delta-8 to reduce the product price and sell products published as “pure HHC” using fake certifications (COA).

Also, to produce HHC, chemists use specific metal catalysts such as palladium on carbon, platinum on carbon, or Raney nickel. And it is essential that multiple filtrations properly remove these metals because if they don’t, they may cause long-term health problems.

So, pay attention to the products from random companies without references in the cannabis field, no-name products from third countries, and of course, black market products.

HHC vs THC vs CBD Main differences

As we already mentioned, the HHC in hemp products results from hydrogenation, making these products more resistant to heat and UV rays. So they last longer on store shelves than products containing cannabidiol or tetrahydrocannabinol. In addition, hexahydrocannabinol has a mild psychoactive effect, enhancing the euphoric feeling more than THC as both chemical compounds bind to CB1 neuroreceptors, while CBD, on the other hand, has an antipsychotic effect.

HHC (Hexahydrocannabinol) Side-effects

More studies are clearly needed on the beneficial properties as well as the side effects of HHC. So far the evidence shows that it is a safe chemical compound, but that does not mean that it can be used recklessly. Side effects have been observed, which should be taken into account before using similar products:

  • Tachycardia
  • Nausea
  • Paranoia
  • Anxiety
  • Cotton-mouth
  • Red eyes
  • Appetite and digestion disorders

Cannabis, cannabinoids, and their chemical compounds have fascinated the scientific community, people who use similar products for either medical or recreational use, while a promising trade has developed.

Is HHC detected in the body?

Opinions and experiences vary. As we still know very little about this new cannabinoid we recommend athletes, law enforcement, and people who are subject to monthly drug tests to avoid consuming HHC as it is very likely to show up in their toxicology controls.

As we usually mention, knowledge is essential, so the more research there is, the better and more valid data we have at an individual and social level. A herb like cannabis may not be a panacea, but so far, it has shown significant results, and multiple applications while it has worked therapeutically, giving hope to many people.
