Insomnia and CBD

CBD contained in hemp plants has the proven capability to reduce anxiety states. The scientific evidence in this field has made researcher interested in the possibility of using cannabidiol to improve the quality of sleep as well.

In the past few years, it emerged, among many other facts, that CBD helps to reduce the disturbances of the REM phase of sleep in those individuals affected by Parkinson’s Disease, often expressed in physical actions during sleep which put the person at numerous risks to their personal safety.

Results like the above, stimulated the world of researchers to increasingly expand the investigations on the role cannabis can play while we are asleep.

CBD and sleep. Research up to now

The review of all preliminary research studies on cannabis and insomnia suggest that cannabidiol (CBD) could have therapeutic potential for the treatment of insomnia. Delta-9 tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), on the other hand, is, in fact, able to reduce sleep latency, but could also compromise the quality of sleep in the long term.

CBD showed to be more than promising in intervening in sleep disorders and, if taken in low dosages, on the excessive daytime drowsiness. Research on cannabis and sleep, although still in its first phase, has given positive results. Further controlled and longitudinal research is fundamental in order to improve our comprehension of research and its clinical implications.

CBD, anxiety, and sleep

Patients with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) often report sleep disorders, like insomnia or various anomalies during the REM phase.

Cannabidiol (CBD), a cannabis compound, reduces the physiological non-REM sleep (NREM) and the REM sleep.

Considering that the progression of an anxiety state in generally caused by persistent stress over a period of time,  some researchers of the Taiwan National University wanted to verify whether cannabidiol would result effectively in mitigating sleep disturbances caused by anxiety.

The research team applied various standard procedures on mice in order to administrate CBD. The researchers noticed immediately how the general anxiety diminished (confirming the already many results in this direction). Moreover, as already expected, CBD effectively blocked the anxiety state, intervening during the REM sleep phase, allowing the mice long restoring rest periods.

Cannabis is proving more each day to be a useful ally in improving the quality of our nightly rest. Important, as always, is to consume quality products, certified and produced in a natural manner.
